Hi, I have had my Xperia S for a while now without difficulty, until recently. I was having a few minor issues and so I decided to do a settings reset (not a factory reset). All of those issues were fixed, however, my WiFi now refuses to work. I try to turn it on and the it comes up with the 'turning on WiFi' message, but then refuses to go any further. After a few minutes or hours (it's been chznging) it reverts back to the WiFi 'switch' being in the off position. As of yet I have not tried a factory reset, but I would rather not have to do that as I have alot of data and backing up and restoring thanks a slow and painful process. Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Try to restart your phone by press and hold the power button and volume up button at the same time.
If the problem persists, you unfortunately have to try to factory reset or repair the phone software using PC Companion:

Don't forget to backup your phone.
Have you cleared the ARP cache on the Wi-Fi AP/Modem? and/or reset/cleared DHCP on the Wi-Fi modem/router. And/or restart the Wi-Fi modem/router.
Some times DHCP gets 'confused' on lease times and a restart of the phone and the Wi-Fi modem/router could fix the problem.
Is the phone OK with another Wi-Fi modem/router when one connects to someone elses Wi-Fi service?
Another option may be to set a static IP address in the network IP range of your Wi-Fi modem/router
Commonly consumer modems/routers have an IP address starting with 192.168.n.n
n can quite often be 1, as in 192.168.1.1
If you have a consumer Wi-Fi modem/router with default IP addressing you can configure an IP address for your phone in the range of 192.168.n.10 through to 192.168.n.250 with an IP subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
The gateway IP address is the IP address assigned to your Wi-Fi modem/router.
Your admin guy/gal can help you here.
Sorry, i have the same problem.
I´m from Brazil and my phone is XPERIA SL
i make the reset and before i re-install the software.
nothing is resolved =(
Help Please.
(Sorry for my bad inglish)
Funny how support can only suggest a reboot and an upgrade.
This bug is present since the phone came out, and so is the louzy solution presented.
Your wifi on this phone is unstable, unreliable and worthless.
Sony knows it but is not capable in fixing it.
Wifi reconnects randomly without any specific reason.
The wifi gets shutdown randomly, and the only thing to get it working again is rebooting the phone.
The phone reboots without any particular reason.
And of course updates from sony are a decade behind.
Hi I'm double posting this from a similar thread I just commented on-
I have the exact same problem: wifi won't turn on, grayed out slider, on my Xperia S with the newest software. My phone restarts without warning often. I noticed that if you watch the menu, the phone is actually trying to turn on the wifi and it's failing. Based on this, my assumption is that it's a hardware problem. I think the wifi chip is no longer connected internally for some reason (too many drops?) If you do a quick settings reset which doesn't delete any photos or music or anything, it just resets the basic system settings, it turns the wifi off and you'll notice that the slider is no longer grey. This saves a lot of battery. Luckily I have an unlimited data subscription but it's not as fast as wifi and for a device that's less than 2 years old and was treated well, I'm very upset.
And yes, I've tried restarting and also doing a clean install of new software and still no wifi.
If anyone with this exact problem takes it to a service center and has any luck, please update this thread.
@onlysoma - You are quite likely correct in your case that this is a hardware issue. However as it is not an issue across the board with this model I would strongly advise getting it into an authorised repair agent so that it may be assessed.

Yeah, must be a hardware problem.
However, I bought it I'm from Brazil and imported my phone from Europe, why would be cheaper for me.
(The Xperia S is sold at 1400Reais, almost two minimum wages in Brazil.)
And so the Guarantee here in Brazil does not cover the repair.
The only alternative is to throw the phone in the trash?
Well I'm also having the same problems you have and I have Xperia Sl but the diffirence is that when I used to have Ice cream sandwich android system my Wi-Fi was working properly but after I've updated it to Jelly Bean (and I'm sure that it's the last version for my mobile I've checked for it using both PC sony companion and Sony update service ) my Wi-Fi connection has dropped and stopped working though when I turn it on it takes too long and after that it searches for network and also takes too long but at the end it can't find any networks while the signal is full .
So what will I do ?
