Wi-Fi N speeds

Hi,

On my Xperis SP the wireless speed that I can see is 72Mbps, where as I have WirelessN router capable of 300Mbps. My laptop connects at 150Mbps easily(it has a Broadcom 150Mbps wireless card). I was wondering why my phone is not able to connect beyond 72Mbps, even when I am standing right next to router.

PS: My HTC Incredible S also does not connect beyond 72Mbps

Thanks.

WiFi speeds are mostly theoretical. So 300Mbps probably won't give you full (or most of the) speed by default.
There are many parameters which are depended on, from bands (2.4Ghz / 5Ghz) your router is configured to use, channels in use (and channel bonding!) and surrounding interference. So it can be some setting in your router or your phone that interfere "higher" speeds. In the end even some WiFi cards "misbehave" with some routers, so it can be a lot of potential reasons why.

What model is your router? Maybe there is some specific feature that is misconfigured or can be set on, to allow higher speeds?

Btw.. Did you check what your phone detects when connected to your WiFi connection? Fing or Wifi Analyser are good Android apps/tools for that.

EDIT: I forgot to say, that I don't know what exact technology is used for WiFi in Xperia SP (or HTC for that matter) is it single or multi band technology. If someone knows more would also like to hear more on this subject.

I suspect this has to do with channel width on your network. On 20MHz width you will get 72Mbps while on 40MHz you will get 150Mbps but the actual speed also depends on number of streams that the AP and client supports. Your computers wireless card probably supports 2 streams which gives you 150Mpbs (2x72) but to get that speed in the phone on one stream your network needs to use 40Mhz channel width. If you have other wireless networks nearby you will however probably not be able to use 40MHz channel width.

It's daubtful that there one phone's connectivity is able to reach 72Mbps, even though its technology says up to 100Mbps - 150Mbps. In actual fact the average speed is about 2Mbps - 14Mbps
