Why does the camera take such bad pictures?

Most of the pictures i take in low light situations are like this. While if i change to other software like google camera, the pictures get better and much sharper!

yes its true the software is bad not the hardware sony software uses high post processing and u can see before taking the picture it looks normal but hold for focus it becomes super bright then u get the result bad low light picture if sony fixes the software it can beat the rivals and become kings

Exactly my thought.

Also because i notice that daylight pictures are great! So vivid and detailed. But then at night almost every pic looks like a painting or something.

i would have added this camera software problem in bbc watch dogs really sony lost their touch since the launch of xperia z all z series phones should have been known as the best camera phones but they are the worst because of the software sony why cant you be awesome like xperia arc and xperia tx days

I'm really diisapointed of quality Sony Z1/Z2 series camera. It's have a lager and better sensor then other smartphones but real images teken from Z1 device is stronly poor than images from other modern smartfones LG G2 (for example) , LG G2 hase old Sony 16 MPix sensor, but quality of images better! I Ask SONY why? Why OLD and smaller sensor give images better that yours newer 20MPix  and bigger sensor? I think problem in alghoritms of jpeg processing. Z1 image have a artefacts of noise reduction (combined pixels in vertical lines , looks like a worm on image) this artefacts destroing quality of image.  I think Sony MUST develop complitely new firmware for BIONZ processor and new algoritms of jpeg postprocessing,

we have NO advantege of new sensor now, all destroyed by poor image processing. Latest  firmware slightly better situation, but no big differences- tha same  artefacts of noise reduction like a worm on image.... in full size look like bad jpeg compression. This situation biggest fault of SONY. SONY promise best mobile camera .... but it is not true.

     you shared very good info u need to say directly to the community guys this info needs to be forwared to the software team and all you said is true the processing and the algorithms are not written well they need to build a new firmware for camera from the ground specially for 20.7 hardware

I'm not having this issue o.O ! its working great even when there is no lights (totally dark) 

have you tried the superior auto ?
