i have activated 3g service in my handset.but when i am surfing the 3g symbol doesn't appear in the signal bar, instead i get an 'h'..is it normal.if so why sony cant give the 3g symbol like all other phones do..it looks quite good with the 3g symbol on the bar.please include in next update..
Yes it's normal. The H symbol stands for HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) which is faster than 3G (also known as 3.5G and 3G+), so in areas where your network has this service, you will get the H symbol, whereas in other areas you may get 3G or just 2G, depending on coverage.
i never got 3g ever..it's either 'h' or 'E' that i get...should have put that 3g symbol..it looks nice..thanks for the reply
The E stands for EDGE, which is faster than 2G (also known as 2.5G). If you changed networks, you might find that the 3G symbol appears more often, but the H service is an improvement on 3G anyway.
lol. this is funny
ur phone and carrier support HSPA (aka 3.5G)... why in the world would u want a 3G icon to appear?
i'd be darned pissed if i only got 3G appearing there
oh... and if u really want the word 3G to appear so much... get an iPhone4...
or 4S, or 3G/3GS... don't get the iPhone5 cos then u'll be asking why is it showing LTE instead

oh btw... iirc i've seen 3G appearing before in the P... i was in some silly new building with bad coverage...
I know the answer now that I have found this thread, but I must admit to being confused as well.
I now appreciate that the 'H' is better than the '3G' but it does not help that the operating manual for the Xperia P lists the icons as:
R-Roaming
G-GPRS is available
E-EDGE is available
3G-3G is available
Perhaps if SONY had put an 'H' in their manual, people would not have to scour the Internet to find answers
