Usb storage access issue

I have a flash drive plugged in to the usb port using a Connector/adapter. The flash contains Pdfs. The tablet is telling me the usb is empty or the file system is not supported. I have Adobe reader for Android loaded. When I touch the usb icon it wants to format the flash which will delete the data. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

You will have to reformat it (FAT32 or exFAT)

Uliwooly is correct, however please make sure you back up the data on the drive to a PC first if possible.

I have asked about USB storage/OTG cables without much help. So I've been experimenting. the tablet doesn't seem to have issues with USB drives that can be connected directly to an OTG cable.

If you put a cardreader in the mix, then all bets are off. I have not been able to connect sdhc /CF cards with a card reader. It just does not recognize them.
