Hi there. My phone is deteced normally, but when trying to update (plugging phone in and pressing down on the volume), windows says that the device is not recognised.
What to do?
To solve the issue, open Device Manager on your computer to reinstall the driver for your device while your device is connected with your PC via a USB cable.
Microsoft Windows 8 users
To open Device manager on your computer
Click the Desktop Tile to open the Desktop.
Click >> at the bottom right of the taskbar.
Select Control Panel from the Menu.
Select Device Manager from the list of control panel items.
Note: If you do not see the screen with the Device Manager option, click the View by drop-down menu and select Small icons.
To reinstall the drivers for your device
Scroll down to the Universal Serial Bus controllers (USB section) of the Device Manager window.
Look for an MTP Device: Media Device, Unknown Device or any other reference to your phone. Click on this entry and choose "Uninstall" whilst leaving the device connected.
Wait a few minutes, and the computer will reinstall the drivers for the device.
Now, the phone is accessible via Computer/My Computer on your computer.

Hey Guys! I am Sony XPERIA E (single SIM) user. My Device is running Android 4.1.1 (Build number - 11.3.A.0.47). Recently I got a notification about updating the system software to 11.3.A.2.23. It says that Sony PC Companion is required. I have installed Sony PC Companion on my Windows 8.1 Sony Vaio. The process of downloading update to PC went smoothly. But when it says to Power Off your phone and Power it on Pressing and Holding the Volume Down key while connecting cable into the phone. I have done the same thing but it says that USB Device not recognised. I have done the same thing which is mentioned. Uninstalled the driver but still it shows USB Device not recognised. I think it maybe a problem with Sony PC Companion. Maybe it's not compatible with Windows 8.1. Please help me. Thanks in Advance.
Same here... What kinda sh*t is this anyway.
Why do we actually have to update via a PC? It's a f*cking smartphone, make the update so that you only need the device that requires the update. You don't update your PC via your smarthphone?
Please be aware that 8.1 is not on the list of compatible versions at this stage:
