update from android 2.3.7 after a factory reset

I have done a few factory resets on an old phone now to give to my mum but each time it comes with the up to date software but nothing will work as it is using android 2.3.7 and I cant find a way to update this

google play doesnt work and there is nothing on sony website to help

i have installed the pc companion and all that does is say that the software is uptodate, but even running the whole program and going through, disconnecting the usb, turning the phone off and reconnecting usb with the volume button down still comes out that it is uptodate but with android 2.3.7.

Please help, I'm going round in circles and tearing my hair out and my 73 yr old mum doesnt have a mobile at the moment which is driving us all mad when we cant track her down lol

Well, if PC Companion says it's the latest update it might be some customization that didn't get any more updates beyond 2.3.7. In that case you have to install a later version using 3rd party software.
