Unable to install or start phone software update components.

This error appears to be quite commmon when upgrading to Android 2.1, yet there seems nothing posted on fixing it.

Is there a directory on the PC or phone which is blocking this?

Anyone tried it on a second PC?

Download "Update_Service_Setup-2.11.12.5.exe" install and follow the instructions.

I can't update either and can't seem to work out any of the fixes mentioned above. I've updated Java, disabled firewall. If I try to update from the support page I keep going around in circles getitng PC Companion. Any advice?

If this has been going on with so many people for so long, why wouldn't Sony fix this?

I faced the same issue. I am running Windows 7 Basic on a Dell machine. I unloaded my antivirus and disabled Windows Firewall for all three - local machine, private networks and public networks. Java was already updated. The update worked!

Hi there you just need to turn off the proxy settings on Sony PC companion 

press on tray and choose setting and select no proxy  
and you'r done
