Unable to install or start phone software update components.

This error appears to be quite commmon when upgrading to Android 2.1, yet there seems nothing posted on fixing it.

Is there a directory on the PC or phone which is blocking this?

Anyone tried it on a second PC?

PC Companion hasn't been working properly, try using Update Service

if that doesn't work for you or your carrier/network is NOT releasing 2.1 you can debrand your phone using this method

note that your warranty wont  be valid anymore

I am having the same problem, PC Companion stops and gives me the "Unable to install or start phone software update components." I have tried turning off firewalls, antivirus, tried it in safe mode with networking on three seperate computers without success. I get this same message everytime. I have been unable to locate this Update Software program that has been recommended, did sony ericsson remove it or what? Any suggestions? Thank you.

Yes, it is an old post but ir helped me alot.

I got the Unable to install update dialog really fast. After I dumped the logs I found this:

I didn't found the JRE_Installer-file so I went to java.com and installed latest java (1.7). Now the upgrade seems to be working very well (haven't completed yet).

It worked really well I had no problems at all after that. The phone is now running the latest upgrade.
