Touchscreen lost touch

I have a Z1 phone and have been happy with it until now. Over the last month or so it has noticeably slowed down in performance as well as loosing touch screen sensitivity around the edges and lower screen mainly. I was told that it was a software issue and that I should do a factory reset. Note: At this stage I have 12 Gb of memory available using only 2-3 Gb when this happened. After backing up the phone and also upgrading the software to the latest version before the reset, this is what happened. Upon restarting the phone and proceeding to select the 'language' I am unable to continue as the lower part of the screen does not respond to any touch. I have re-started the phone more than 10 times and nothing works making the phone useless. I have tired most things that are suggested to my Sony already. Does anyone know what I should do, or do I have no choice but to send it in for repair (Phone has not had any serious knocks either)? Thanks!

Contact Sony Xperia Support that does seem to be a hardware issue.
