Download a program called Sony Ericsson Update Service and update your phone which will remove the pattern lock.

You can try typing null as your password it may work

...and just bear in mind that you will lose your personal data, if you haven't backed it up, so that will have to be re-entered.  But, as you will have a phone again, that is probably a relatively minor inconvenience.  And it will serve to remind you to back up your data in future, I suppose.  Still, a bit of a pain.

I would be inclined not to use the pattern lock if I were you.

I just got the x10.  forgot my pattern.  I'm on a MAC and the software isn't working after I mount it.  It doesn't show up as an application either.  When i connect the USB to my Mac, it doesn't read it.  How bad is it for me?  I also don't have any email associated with it. I got the phone from Sony Ericcson at an event and will only use it when i;m in europe and will not have a contract either.

Both Sony packages only work on PC, they don't support Mac.  I think you may have to beg and borrow one from a friend or family member.

I also have the X 10 model and have tried the PC Companion but still can't update my phone because it says to drag the status bar downwards but I can't cuz my screen is locked.

You need to download sony update service and repair:
