Temperature-dependant striping on screen

As the ambient temperature goes down (approximately below +18 degrees Centigrade), parts of the screen, starting from the bottom of the screen, start getting distorted by some sort of striping, as shown below. As the ambient temperature further decreases, the striping increases in intensity, and covers an even bigger part of the screen.

The defect is not due to mechanical damage: it was present already when I first bought this phone ca. 2 years ago. Only a small stripe in the bottom of the screen was affected at that time, so I ignored the defect, until it grew in size and started covering the bigger part of the screen (when it gets real cold, up to 80% of the screen may be affected now).

However as the temerature increases and gets over ca. 20 degrees Centigrade, the defect disappears completely. Until the next frost 🙂

Please advise, what could be causing the issue, and how it can be fixed by user (cause out of experience I heavily mistrust local repair services here in Russia). Thanks.

P.S. Updating or repairing the firmware does not help.

Since this is a hardware issue, you will have to contact your Local support

Hello @DontKnowler and welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear about your phone.

Considering that a software repair didn't help with sorting this out my guess is that this is related to hardware rather than software. When you performed the software repair, did you restore any data or install any apps before checking if your phone still experienced the same behaviour? If so, I would recommend that you perform a factory reset of your device followed by checking if you still experience this before restoring any data or backups.

Should the above not help I would recommend what @uliwooly suggested, contact your Local support team in order to have your device sent to an authorized service centre as they will have more detailed information on local warranty and service procedures in your area.

I'm sorry for any trouble this might cause for you. Please let me know how it goes!

Hi Didrik,

thanks for your response.

I also tend to think that this is a hardware issue, but hope that it is a minor one, since it looks like some minor loss of contact to me. So probably restoring the contact would not be that much of a problem? I am still hoping that I am not the first person in the world to have this issue, and that probably somebody would share some helpful experience on it.

And - yes, I double-checked the problem right after a factory reset and before installing any sortware or restoring backups, and it persisted.

BTW just noticed: looks like the back panel of my phone is slowly getting loose (looks like it is simply glued to the rest of the phone, with no mechanical fixtures whatsoever, but now in some places the glue is not really holding the back panel in place any more). Sony, that was a bad idea to attach phone backs in such an unreliable manner!!! I never submitted my phone to any untolerable mechanical stresses, and still the phone falls apart, as if it were some cheap scrap and not Hi-End. Who knows for how long my phone has been non-watertight without me knowing that!!!

Could that back panel issue be somehow connected with my progressing screen-striping issues?

P.S. Tried contacting local support via e-mail: no e-mail address is provided, and the on-site e-mail form simply does not work 😞 Tried 3 different browsers from 2 different computers - same result. Never had similar issues on other sites. Am dissapointed with service.

P.P.S. Tried contacting local support via the chat form: am getting

" 400 Bad request

Hi again,

It's hard for me to say if this is related to the loose back cover or not, my recommendation is that you have your device sent in to be examined as soon as possible. With the back cover being loose I would not advise you to have phone in contact with water until it has been repaired.

Any and all feedback regarding our products is much appreciated!

Regarding you not being able to contact your local support team, what country of support are trying to reach? The e-mailaddress is questions.XX@support.sonymobile.com where XX is a code for the country. The code for Russia is "ru".

Hi Didrik,

thanks again for your prompt response.

I never ever took the risk of getting my Ultra in contact with water, despite of the fact that the device is deemed to be waterproof, and now I am happy about having been that wise 🙂 Now that I know that the device is not sealed any more I will be even more cautious.

Yes, I was trying to reach the Russian Sony support, for I am based in Moscow, Russia.

Thank you for the direct e-mail address of the Russian support team: will be e-mailing them right now; and will keep the forum members updated.
