Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
A restart of the phone should exit safe mode. But if you have tried this without success, I suggest that you perform a software repair via PC Companion to exclude problems related to the software:
http://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/pc-companion/
In PC Companion you press start on Support Zone > Start on Update the phone/tablet software > Repair phone/tablet (the blue clickable link in the message) > Follow these steps without having your device connected to the PC.
Follow the instruction that appears in the program and do not connect your device until this guide tells you how to connect it.
I don't have PC companion, I hav sony bridge for mac.
Please eleborate any instructions as your last ones were not clear.
Thank you.
If you are going to perform a software repair in Bridge for Mac, you should wait to connect the phone via USB-cable > Start Bridge for Mac > Select "Xperia" and then "Repair Xperia Device" > A step-by-step guide will now start that will take you through the whole repair. Note that, this guide will tell you when and how to connect the phone. Do not connect the phone before you get instructions about how to connect it.
is it possible to do a software repair, when I use the phone as a hotspot for my laptop to connect to the internet, or will I have to have an alternative connection for my laptop?
Unfortunately, that is not possible. You need to use an alternative internet connection to perform a software repair.
Thank you.
I've tried rebooting & software repair but still unable to get out of safe mode. Can this mean that it is a hardware problem?
