striped up by sony!

I've had a Sony z1 compact for close to 2 years now. For the last 3-4 months the battery hasn't held a charge. I returned it to Sony as it was still covered by warranty (until the end of march), there response was it's not covered as the screen is cracked, and to have the battery issue looked at I must pay £90 to have a screen put on it.
Problem is the screen was not damaged when I sent it to them. It was packaged in the manner the instructed and sent with the courier they arranged(dpd). They are trying to tell me as the packaging was not damaged then dpd have not caused the damage. I work for a firm supplying mail order car parts, and I know from experience sending for example car lights, they can get damaged no matter how well packed they are. We use dpd and there drivers just throw anything on top of anything and we've had loads of parts delivered to people where the packaging is in one piece but the contents are not, too the point where we've had to start telling people to sign as damaged regardless just so they can claim if it is damaged inside the packing.
If dpd havent broke it then one of there staff has.
I have 8 people at my work place that all confirm my phone was not damaged when it left us.
I'm not prepared to pay £90 to repair a fault that didn't exist when the phone was picked up or the £22 to have my phone returned now it has 2 faults and not just the one.
Advice please

I'm sorry to hear that, you need to stay in contact with your Local support and the dpd carrier, if your coworkers saw no damage on the phone when you place it in the package and if your Local support said there was damage, you know what happened here, but there isn't much anyone could suggest here, since this is a user based forum.

If the phone is under warranty, why would they charge you £22 to have your phone returned?

@FrontierGate, While processes may differ between regions, the way I understand it is this: The repair centre received a device with physical damage. As physical damage is not covered by the conditions of warranty, the warranty was declined. The £22 would be for an assessment fee for the cost and time of taking a look at the handset and/or shipping costs to return it to the user.

@notveryhappywithsony, I'm really sorry to hear about your experience with this. As uliwooly said, this is a user forum and you will have to take this up between the postal service and your local Sony support team. It would be in the best interest of the repair agent to cover a device under warranty as Sony would pay them for the repair, so I highly doubt they would have damaged the handset and charged you for it. As they can only assess a device in the condition it was received they can not make assumptions as to how the damage occurred and can only follow the process for your local warranty. Good luck with this!
