Sounds and ringtones

I know how to select the ringtone I want for phone calls, but how do I select one I want for SMS.

It looks to me that the only choices you have are the ones on the phone.

As I don't carry my phone with me around the house I would like a ringtone that I can recognise anywhere.

If you go to settings-sounds-notification,you should have a little music note in the right corner which lets you select from your own files.

For SMS notification:

Messaging app > Settings > Notification tone > Music note ( upper right corner) > Choose Walkman - just once and then select the melody that you want.
