Sound stopped working?

Hi guys wonder if you can help me,

last night my phone started making a weird noise (like an amp thats been left on, that sort of hum) for a couple of minutes which then stopped. However all sound has stopped.

Has this happened to any of you guys? Advice before I ring up my phone shop and get a repair/replacement?

This does very much sound like a hardware issue and I would have to advise taking it back so that it can be assessed by an authorised repair agent sorry.
