Sony Xperia S update problems

I have a few problems.

1) My computer rarely recognises my phone so this is a challenge in itself. I plug it in and sometimes it flashes up right away, other times it thinks about it for a while and then tells me to restart my phone and then press the volume down key while plugging it into the computer. This has never worked. Eventually I decided to install the drivers directly from the website rather than off my phone and this seemed to make pc companion recognise my phone perfectly everytime.

When the computer does recognise the phone, it tells me there is a software update, great! I'm hoping this is finally ICS.

2) I start the update process, check the phone's at least half charged etc everything it says and it seems to start off fine. It gets to the 'preparing computer' stage and loads up right to about a centimetre from the end of the bar withing 5 minutes. After about another 45 minutes, the bar is fully loaded, but nothing ever happens after that. I have left it for well over 4 hours, just waiting for something to happen, but nothing ever does so I end up cancelling the update and trying again. This evening I have tried for the 6th or 7th time in the last few days and I'm just wondering why it isn't working for me and if anyone else is having the same problem?

I use PC companion normally, but then saw somewhere to try the SEUS thing so I did, however I couldn't get that to even recognise my phone once, it just wanted to me reset the phone and plug it in while holding down the volume key (which I tried several times and still couldn't get it to work- even holding the volume key down for 15 minutes in case the computer would tell me when I could let go)

Since trying SEUS again pc companion will not recognise the phone again so now I feel I am totally at a loss.

I'm using Windows 7 if this is of any help.

Phone details: android version 2.3.7, build number 6.0.a.3.75.

Sorry for the wordy post, I've seen many like this and tried the remedies offered, but so far none have worked for me.

Hi. I had the update issues with my new Xperia S & after a few attempts gave up. I then found that there was an option int he pull down menu to appy the update. I plugged in to mains, set it away & it worked fine for me. i do have WiFi etc. set up so assume myphone used this to download the update & install directly. hope that helps
