Sony xperia s battery problem

I bought a new sony xperia s and when i try to charge it, it keeps on telling me that the battery is 1% charged but it doesn't turn off.

could this be a software problem? or the battery is dead or something?

u just try to charg your phone while it is swiched off and let me know whether it chargs while swiched off.. i'll let you know the next step....
