I recently bought the W995 to replace a lost phone. It was an unlocked phone so none of the message settings were inputed into the phone. My carrier is AT&T. I was able to set up the internet and messaging at a AT&T service center. So internet works and messaging works. I am able to receive picture messages but I am not able to send picture messages. It always says message failed to send if I attach a picture. Wanted to see if I can figure this out before heading back to the service center. Any suggestions? Thanks! -Bob
I had a similar problem with another phone which was solved after a master reset.Make sure you back up your phone data on PC/PC Companion/memory card/SIM card beforehand, and you will need to re-input all the sms/mms/internet settings after the reset, so make a note of all the details. Let me know if this helps.
I figured it out. Works fine now. Had to tweak the "proxy settings" under "internet settings" a bit. The girl at the AT&T service center put the wrong settings in the phone, she also inputed the wrong address into the MMS profile.
Did a master reset to start from scratch.
Named my data account "3gprs"
Entered the following settings.
APN: wap.cingular
UserName: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Login Request: Off
IP Address: leave blank
DNS Address: leave blank
Authentication: CHAP
Data Compression: Off
Header Compression: Off
Proxy Settings: On, Multiple
Then go into proxy settings and do this:
Proxy: On
Same for all servers: Off
Proxy Servers: Multiple
Then go into proxy servers and do this:
Select HTTP then:
Username: leave blank
Password: leave blank
Proxy Address: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Then go into your messaging settings and do this.
Menu->messaging->settings->picture message then go down do MMS profile.
Select new profile.
Under MMS profile name type MEdia Net.
Under Message Server type: http://mmsc.cingular.com
Select Connect Using 3gprs.
I am now able to send/recieve MMS texts without a problem, internet works flawlessly, youtube works correctly.
That's great news! I'm sure this will be of interest to other at&t users as well.
The only issue that I am having now is connecting it to the computer via USB.
Phone charges fine with my car charger and wall charger. Will not charge with USB.
Tried dowload both the old SE updater and the Sony PC Companion.
Plug the phone into the computer. The phone shows that it is connected to USB (usb icon appears on the phone) but the computer does nothing. No "new harware found" message, nothing.
Tried two different cables on two different computers (one Vista, one Windows 7).
Any ideas with this?
I sometimes have the same problem with my W995, which is solved by simply cleaning the fast port connector on the phone with a soft brush (there's no problem with the mains charger, as in your case) and making sure that the USB connection on that side is making good contact, as it sometimes isn't even if it appears secure (you can test this by pressing it in a little further even when it seems secure, and see if the phone starts charging).
Otherwise, with the phone switched on and connected via USB, try rebooting the PC and see if that does that trick (this worked with another phone). Also, make sure that the USB mode in the phone is set to Phone/PC mode.
You might also want to download My Phone Explorer to your PC and try connecting your phone to it via USB (or via Bluetooth): http://www.fjsoft.at/en/downloads.php
Hope this helps.
This MyPhoneExplorer seemed to fix the usb problem. Works good now. Sony PC Companion works now. My guess being an unlocked phone from Hong Kong, Sony PC Companion didn't have the required drivers for the W995. Thank you very much!
No worries.
