Sms not functioning, Email, lost data after update

Hello,

My Xperia S was updated about two weeks ago, from a pretty old android version - 

Now it constantly says "sorry, email has stopped working", as well as tons of other things with the device, such as SMS, MMS, and sometimes the call funciton, wich works still, somewhat.

The big issue is however that all the pictures and files has, not been deleted, but you can't find them exploring the simcard - yet they still exist when I use an app and delve into the depths of the device. They seem to have slipped "down a level" in the hierarchy. 

While I know that I can solve my problems by fact resetting, I need to get my pictures and files out of the device first! 

Please help me!

Sorry to hear about your problems. I suggest that you clear data for album and media storage. Go to settings > apps > all > album/media storage > clear data. Restart phone and wait for the phone to index the media. Then you should be able to find all files again. 

While you're at it, clear data for the email application as well.  Go to settings > apps > all > email > clear data.

Hi Alexander, thank you for your reply - It seems that what you suggested indeed saved all the pictures I had on my card - they re-indexed properly. Also I dont get the frequent "your email has stopped working" notification anymore. 

BUT the messaging still seems broken, It simply says "sorry, stopped working", after I try to open up a text conversation. I can scroll through them, but not open or send any new ones.

Got any ideas?

Try Settings - Apps - All - Messaging then tap clear data and see if that works - If not you may have to reset your settings via the backup and reset - Not the factory reset, There is an option for settings reset, This will not delete anything

Hello Thommo,

I tried both - Clearing data for all message related apps, and reset settings. The messaging still crashes, when I try to open a text conversation, or send a new text. Would the factory reset solve this? I have backed up everything I want to back up, more or less.

I can't say for definate but it's worth a try and if that fails then you may have to run a repair - Something may of gone wrong during an update
