Updates go through extensive testing from Sony side and from network operators too, what happened with your last update experience can be merely a coincidence, as software updates won't usually ruin something in hardware.
My advice is to backup your data (just to be safe) and go for the update. If you decide not to update it will not cause you any harm, but you may be missing some bug fixes or new improvements to the software.
