That's not accurate, the update does not affect the SD card, it will delete everything in the internal storage but the SD card should not be affected. use a micro SD adapter and RECUVA on your PC to recover the files, that's assuming that your SD card its not corrupted.
on a side note, was the SD card encrypted?
