Screen Shimmer Normal or Fault?

Hello,

I have recently purchased an Xperia P and I am enjoying it. I use it mainly for music and watching shows on iPlayer last thing at night. As well as the various Android apps like weather, news, eBay etc.

One thing I have noticed is that there appears to be a slight shimmering on the display if you change the angle of the display relative to yourself. This happens when holding the device in Landscape orientation and is not noticeable when using it Portrait. I'm not sure if this is just a limitation of the display tech but I had an SE Sato previosly and that didn't have this.

It's something sublte so not a massive problem but I'm just wondering if this is normal.

Actually,Xperia P has some of the best viewing angles from the smartphone market(this is due to whitemagic technology)

No input?

I went to the local mobile store to look at other displays. I looked at the Xperia Z tablet and the Xperia SP and didn't notice this effect on them.

So, for all P users, does your screen have a shimmer, moire pattern if you alter the viewing angle?

I have taken some video using my ancient SE W810i, the quality is low obviously but you can see the effect I am seeing. You can see bands of light/dark moving up and down the screen left to right when holding the phone in landscape mode.

It looks worse in the video than it does to the eye but all I want to know is if this is a design limitation of this screen or is this handset faulty.

So I didn't get any response here other than from AlexDon - I contacted Sony support and explained the issue. They advised me to send the handset into the SBE repair.

After a week or so I received an email stating that my handset had been repaired and tested and returned to me. When I received it I found that they hadn't done anything. I suspect they looked at it, said 'looks alright to me' and sent it straight back.

Which begs the question maybe it's just me. After consideration I do feel there is an issue with the screen because if they all acted like mine I am sure there would be lots of discussion about it. I can find no mention of someone else asking the same questions as me.

This is my second experience using the SBE service and both times I have found it lacking. The first time was with my SE Satio, the smartphone that Sony forgot - it went from flagship of the range to the phone that shall not be mentioned within the space of about 8 months. I found it wouldn't switch on one day so sent it in - I explained to Sony and SBE that it was out of warranty but they asked to send it in anyway. The only response I could get back from them was that it was out of warranty so they couldn't do anything. I asked if repair was possible they again said it was out of warranty.

At least this time I didn't have to pay to have it returned. I am looking to buy an Xperia Z as my PC alternative and keep the P for my on the road walkman and phone. Got to say my faith in Sony products has been shaken slightly with the Satio and now the Xperia P. I also think your support needs much improvement.
