Ringing volume

Hi. I have a z3. Today I tried turning the volume for incoming calls up and nothing. I went into settings to turn it up from there. It said volume was on minimum and wouldn't turn up from there either. It's not like the button isn't working as on the screen you could tell that altering the volume wasn't an option as the symbol wasn't lit up (to the left of the volume bar)
Any ideas???

restart the phone and check again

if not then boot on safe mode and report back.

Thanks for reply. I've tried restarting and nothing.
How do I put safe mode on?
