Really concerned/ disappointed after updating

After recently making the switch from iPhone to an xperia Z1 a week ago, I was really enjoying my new phone and the Android experience.... until last night.

I plugged in my phone to my PC and got the notification that there was a software update available. Happy to update, I started the process, when I was warned that I would lose all my apps, settings and contacts and that I should backup my phone.

Firstly... in this day and age, what software update makes you lose anything? I can update my PS3 without losing my game saves, friends, data... I can update windows without losing all my software... you can update any iphone without losing contacts apps or data.. why should updating my xperia be any different?

Anyway... so I backed up my phone, and proceeded to update it. After updating, I restored my data..only to get a warning that a whole HEAP of things would NOT be restored (game saves, apps, some settings).

So I manually go through and install my apps, one by one then when finished, I restore my phone again. Still not all my data is restored (wireless access key at work, as well as other data from apps...contact list.. home screen settings).

Is this normal for Sony/ Android? Is there something I have done wrong that can be avoided next time?

That's funny because my install of Kit Kat said specifically you will NOT lose any contacts/data/saved info/pictures or music & I didn't. After the install when first rebooting the software up dated all programs automatically to the new software version. Everything worked without a single issue.

You can backup your phone using the 'Backup & Reset' option on the settings.

Hi guys, before the update process begins you are asked if you backed up your phone, I guess you guys didn't see the importance of that.

I too had an iPhone, which I must say has a better update system but you still need to backup your data before major updates.

I updated using companion.. and just followed the instructions within the software. It warned that I would lose all my data, and suggested I back up my data. So I did (using the backup/restore section of companion).

Once the update was complete, I attempted a restore..and THATS when it told me that a whole heap of my data "could not be restored".

If this is not normal... I mean, if normally when you update, all you do is back your phone up, then restore after upgrade... Im not too upset about this issue. But if each time, I have to manually re download all my apps before I restore, then thats rediculous.

Maybe there was corrupt data in my restoration?

Maybe I did something wrong?

If you guys dont have the same issue, I feel a little relieved.

Update process still **bleep** compared to ANY other operating system update though. Sony should be able to work out their software so that it automatically backs up your system and restores... no warnings necessary, just do it all automatically.
