problems with software upgrade, x10

whilst trying to do a software upgrade via pc companion i get to the part where it asks me to remove the data transfer cable, turn phone off, wait 5 seconds , plug cable back into laptop and then hold down the back key whilst plugging the cable back into the phone...i do this and nothing happens apart from the phone starts charging from the laptop.

I have tried this several times and although the instructions dont say anything about turning the phone back on i have tried it both ways, leaving the phone turned off as i think is the right way but also turning the phone back on as  i was at a standstill.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Once you update to 2.3.3 the Backup & Restore app will be gone, BUT you can reinstall it this is how, and also make sure you backup EVERYTHING before the update

make sure you backup everything beforehand

this is how

Use one of these links to download the Backup & Restore app

How to install it

You need to

go to settings -> applications -> check unknown sources

download IO File Manager

https://market.android.com/details?id=org.openintents.filemanager&feature=search_result

download the backup & restore app, transfer it to your SD card, use OI file manager to find it -> tap on it -> install it

Contacts

just to play it safe sync your contacts w/ google if you haven't already

open your phonebook

press MENU button -> tap on Send Contacts -> select all -> send it to your email
on your computer
-> download the file -> go to your gmail -> click on contacts -> click on more actions -> on the drop down menu click on "import" -> choose the file -> and click import

Don't worry so much about backing up your apps

or your SMS use

If none of the above works, Then I could suggest trying another PC as it could be related to the Laptop you are currently using.
