whilst trying to do a software upgrade via pc companion i get to the part where it asks me to remove the data transfer cable, turn phone off, wait 5 seconds , plug cable back into laptop and then hold down the back key whilst plugging the cable back into the phone...i do this and nothing happens apart from the phone starts charging from the laptop.
I have tried this several times and although the instructions dont say anything about turning the phone back on i have tried it both ways, leaving the phone turned off as i think is the right way but also turning the phone back on as i was at a standstill.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
use Update Service instead

Once you update to 2.3.3 the Backup & Restore app will be gone, BUT you can reinstall it this is how, and also make sure you backup EVERYTHING before the update
make sure you backup everything beforehand
this is how
Use one of these links to download the Backup & Restore app

How to install it
You need to
go to settings -> applications -> check unknown sources
download IO File Manager

download the backup & restore app, transfer it to your SD card, use OI file manager to find it -> tap on it -> install it
Contacts
just to play it safe sync your contacts w/ google if you haven't already
open your phonebook
Don't worry so much about backing up your apps
on your computer go to
market.android.com -> log in -> click on My Library -> and send all your apps to your phone

if you don't want to use the backup & restore app then

if the Update it's not available on your country, this is how to manually update your phone
thanks for all those tips....but still it wont do anything when i hold down the back key...tried my laptop in safe mode too....grrrrrrrrr
might be dumb..but first connect the cable to your phone...then press the back button and then plug the cable in your laptop..i do the same
also your battery should be more than 50% charged,,
If none of the above works, Then I could suggest trying another PC as it could be related to the Laptop you are currently using.
