I have a problem with the compass of my XPERIA P. I downloaded a compass app and the needle just rotate with the phone. I went then did a service test by dialing *#*#7378423#*#* service test>compass and the yaw was always around 240 degrees. I then did a repair on my phone nd now the yaw is always around 40 degrees. If I turn the phone the yaw changes but then returns to 40 degrees. What is wrong and what can I do to fix it.
In that case you should contact your local support team, to have the phone examined and fixed at an repair center.

Are you using your phone's compass while your near a magnet or magnetic surface (sheet if metal).
I had the same problem with my previous phone, LG Optimus One. I believe it was caused when I placed my phone near a magnet (I was using the metal detector option in a compass app) and I believe it damaged the internal compass.
NOTE: Compasses work by detecting the worlds magnetic field. So a magnet can pull on and possibly damage your compass.
No It is not near anything magnetic
