I have same problem with my Xperia S , the back button is not working every time , i have to press 2-3 times to get it to work !!
I had the same problem before.
But I removed the factory installed screen protector and replaced with a copter protection, and since then the buttons are working much better.
man, i dont use any of that screen protector
but still have problems
the buttons can be difficult to pressed. one tip i learn is that swiping is easier than tapping. Just tap on the button and swipe downwards. 😃
What Zann.H mentions above puts light on what might be the issue.
Also, the keys might seem a bit tricky in the beginning before you get convenient with them and learn how they work.

I have the same problem and it is very frustrating for a mobile like this. The back button is the most important function of the phone. I have been using my phone for 3 days and can't figure out how to press it correctly to make it work every time.:smileycry:
Why it should be like this? The back button should work naturally without any trick or learning. Its just a button. Why I have to resort to any other way to make it work? This is bad design.
Whenever someone wants to try my new phone I am embarassed by the back button. They press on the dots and it doesn't work. What do they think about it when its a flagship expensive phone from SONY?:smileysad:
This is my first SONY phone and I am sure i will not buy another sony phone blindly.:smileyalert:
you don't have to learn a trick, just press the button itself, if you are aiming for the clear bar you won't hit the button its about .5mm above that. if you press near the bar then drag your finger up the button won't work, you will get used to it
There's nothing really Sony can do at this point, this is a design "issue" (for some) and it can't be changed (since it's out on the market).
I have the same buttons issue with my Xperia S..... This is my first sony and it was an horrible experience.... in my case the contact area of the 3 buttons is between above the white dots an the end line of the screen..... this is really anoying and frustrating..... The problem can be fixed with firm updates??? or is a hardware problem?? My compilation num is: 6.0.A.3.7.5... I will never buy any SONY phone in my life.... I will come back to Samsung..... Sorry for my english.
You removed factory installed protector?
I acknowledge the buttons are far from great, but after a while you get used to it and tapping gets better.
