Problem in Tethering

I am getting "Thethering error" in popup window saying Error occured during thering.

I am facing this prob in xperia P android 4.0.4  build number 6.1.1.B.1.54 . Not able to tether both wifi and USB. Can anyone tell me a solution ?

I'm trying to tether with GSM/WCDMA through USB, but I seem to need a RNDIS-driver, which I can't find.

I have exact same versions and same problem.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Settings -> More... -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> Portable Wi-Fi hotspot

2. Click OK on the "Tethering & portable hotspot" popup

Then a new popup showing this error shows up:

Title: Tethering error

Text: Error occurred during tethering

Then tethering is active but actually doesn't work.

This is a core feature and I'm willing to sell my phone if this doesn't get solved really soon.

This error would usually occur if the SIM card within the handset does not support tethering or if an acceptable network connection is unavailable.

My first suggestion would be to speak with your service provider to ensure that they do not have any blocks on tethering and also to check whether the Internet settings you have on the handset for their connection is a full access account which allows tethering.

Thanks for the reply Aimee, but it's not the case.

My SIM card and the plan I have with my carrier (Ancel/Antel from Uruguay) does have data AND tethering enabled. This carrier does NOT block tethering or charge extra for doing so.

I've used the same plan for almost 2 years before buying this Xperia P, with a Nexus One and had no issues doing tethering. The APN configuration I'm using is exactly the same I used with the Nexus One (Android 2.3.7) but it fails with the explained error in the Xperia phone.

Testing the very same SIM on a friend's phone (not xperia) and configuring the same APN I get tethering working just fine.

Just in case, I went earlier today to my service provider's tech support office and they agreed everything is correctly configured and tethering should be working. They also said they have seen the same error on other Xperia phones (some P) during the last month but they don't have a workaround.

So... everything indicates this is a problem either with the xperia p hardware or (hopefully) a bug in the latest build(s).

I expect Sony to fix it by delivering an over the air update with a fix.
