Power button unresponsive

This morning I had a big hiccup with my Z1 Compact. I've resolved the issue for the moment, but I'd really like some help to make sure it doesn't happen again and/or isn't an inherent failure of the phone.

I've had the phone for 3 weeks and have loved it. This morning I opened AR Effect, which came pre-installed but updated itself a few days ago (this was the first time I've opened it since updating). I was disapointed to see that several of the effects were missing and I seemed tto have to re-download them from Google Play. I hit download on one I've used previously, went to Play, saw that it would be 10MB to download (ugh) and was debating whether to do so or not when withouut warning the phone returned to the camera mode, exiting Play. I shrugged, thought, I'll deal with that later, hit the lock button, and turned back to my reading. A few minutes later, I wanted to check a note on my phone so I hit the unlock button - and got no response. I tried again - nothing. I tried holding it down - still nothing. I couldn't think of anything else to try.

I did some Googgling, found Xperia Care, entered chat with a support rep, described the problem, and his response was that if the power button is unresponsive, it's a faulty device and I need to contact the retailer. Unfortunately, I bought the phone in Melbourne and have since relocated to Suva, Fiji for a few months. I can't exactly slip down to JB on my lunch break!! I know where there is a Sony Centre in Suva, but the Xperia support guy said I couldn't take it to them because warranties don't cross international boarders. Distraught, I emailed JB HiFi (where I bought the phone), but haven't heard back from them yet.

I did some more Googling and found someone who ssuggested holding down the power and up volume buttons at the same time to reboot the phone. That did nothing, but I tried with the down volume button as well. Almost right away, my phone vibrated, and proceded to boot - yay!!!!! Everything was there, and seemed to be fine.

However what I don't know is how it happened in the fisrt place, whether it will happen again. I haven't iopened AR Effect again yet, because I'm worried it caussed the issue in the fisrt place. Or could it have been the Play Store? I'm also really concerned that the Xperia support guy didn't suggest presssing the volume and power buttons together, and just said to return it - if that's the quality of support offered by Sony, it's LOW.

I really want to work out what happened here. Part of the reason I chose the Z1C is that it is quite rugged, and Sony have a reputation for high quality devices - as someone working overseas in international development, I need something that's going to go the distance, as I can't get to repair services and such with ease most of the time.

Does anyone have any ideas??

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

That sounds strange. I have not experienced this by myself by using the AR effect. But it sounds like a process (hard to say which one) hanged and thereby, why your power button was unresponsive. When you hold the ON/OFF button + volume down button, you will force a shut down/restart of your unit.

I suggest that you make sure that you have the latest software on your Xperia Z1 Compact. You can check this via our program PC Companion:

If you experience this issue more times and you have the latest software, I suggest that you perform a software repair on your unit. This software repair can also be done via PC Companion.
