Phone loses in- call functionality

When making a call, my xperia sp loses functionality.  After 5 seconds or so, the screen goes blank and I am unable to get anything to show. If for example an answerphone kicks in and I do not wish to leave a message, I am unable to get anything to show on the screen to enable me to end the call.  Am I doing something stupid, or is this a phone fault?  Anyone else?

Do you have a case or screen protector on the handset as that could be interfering with the proximity sensor.
