Phone hangs on awful ribbon screen after 6.0.1 upgrade

Hi all.

I've just upgraded my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. I've only had this phone two months after my original Z3 Compact was consigned to the knackers yard after it refused to charge.

Last month I switched my phone off while I was in work to save battery. When I switched it back on it hung on the awful ribbon screen or said "Optimising apps" and there was a vicious circle. I had to use Phone Companion to reset the phone and start again.

This morning I upgraded to 6.0.1 Marshmellow I found it said Google Play Services needed updating for Google services to work. Even though it was, I downgraded and re-upgraded. Still said it so I restarted the phone and then it hung on the awful ribbon screen. The phone was extremely warm after the upgrade. I had to press the power button and volume up to shut it down. Tried this a few times - no joy. Afterwards it had cooled down a bit I decided I would try again and I had my laptop on ready to use the Phone Companion to restore the phone but as soon as I connected the phone to my laptop it changed to my lock screen and all was fine.

Now I am extremely worried about switching off my phone or restarting it as it could happen again. Could this be related to the last incident when it hung/bricked last month? Or was it just because it was very hot after upgrading?

(TBH I'm not over the moon about the "upgrade" and preferred the phone on Lollipop but beggars can't be choosers)

@marchondowntheline

it was probably due to heat

on mine it stays on the ribbon screen for longer than it used to when it starts up and i no longer get the brief tune. thats not big deal though as my phone hasnt failed to start up yet. considering the amount of people having problems the latest upgrade clearly wasnt ready and needs a fix made as soon as possible.

Although I think that the wave (or ribbon) isn't that awful, I think that the tune is, anyway it's important to know that after a software upgrade it's normal to get longer boot animation, as well the heat.. Normal too. What is happening is that both cores of the cpu are used to compile upgraded system components hence the heat.

This task can happen only during the boot up and not while the system is running. That's why seems that the animation is just stuck or repeating over and over again.

For who don't know android is nothing else that a Linux distribution, all distributions have a splash screen or boot animation. During the animation lots of operations happens. Like initialization scripts, reconnecting devices, initiating network and after a fresh install or upgrade.. Compiling!

If you was connected via adb during the animation, using the shell and the command top you may see how much cpu usage and load is occurring in that moment as well you could be able to see all the app running.

Turning off the device hasn't broke the upgrade routine as the os will continue the task over and over again until is completed. Once the initial compile task is completed, what will start is the optimization of apps. (That dialog on screen saying that Android is upgrading, App X of Y...) and then finally starting up, running the home launcher and then... Idling until user interaction occur.

You can use de device safely, your device is not going to be a brick anytime soon Winking_Face
