Notifications issue

I was just wondering, can anyone please explain to me why, when I get an app notification, it only sticks around for about a second before disappearing into the ether, rather than allowing me to check it first? I can't imagine what I would have done, if anything, to cause this to happen, but it's very annoying.

they are called notification pop ups.. this is designed to pop up only a few seconds to show you received a notification, usefull when you are looking at your device but the sounds are turned off. if you want to view the notifications then you need to slide down the notification bar. this google /android by design
