New messaging app layout after android 4.3 update

Hi, after the recent software update I realized that the layout of the new messaging app has changed. I really liked the old layout, the spaces in between messages after the update are simply too big for my liking.
Is there any way I can revert back to the previous version or anything that I can do to reduce the spaces to make it look more like the old one?

Rooting is the only option.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I were to root is it possible if I want to stay on this firmware but just revert the messaging app instead of having to flash back to the previous firmware entirely ? Is there a link where I can download the old messanging app?

Message is a default app,it cannot be changed without rooting.

If I root can I just downgrade the messaging app or do I have to downgrade the entire firmware?

I guess you can install a previous messages app.I am not that well informed into rooting.
