Whenever I'm outside a 4G area my phone regularly shows a signal strength 'H' or 'H+' but I still have no network connection. I can't use any app that requires one. As soon as I return to an area with much better signal strength, functionality returns.

Just to clarify, do you mean network connection in general (so no calls/messaging) or just data connection?

It sounds to me like you should contact your operator at first to see if they have any idea what's going on.

They say everything looks good from their end. Handset says I have a great signal but I can't use the internet.

Have you tried this: Main Menu > Settings > Xperia > Internet Settings > Accept > If prompted, select your network provider.

This will allow your handset to download the correct internet settings and should resolve the issue.
