National Roaming detection for MVNOs

I am a mobile subscriber for a Mobile Virtual Network Operator in Spain. It does not opperate on its own network (it never does, since it has NO own network), but doing "local" roaming on another operator's network (by agreement).

My Xperia Arc S is always indicating the "R" sign over the signal strength icon, since it detects some roaming is being done. But it is a local one, which I need not to be aware since no additional charges are to be applied: it is the usual working mode for my operator.

Since the device is detecting roaming mode, it does not allow me to establish 3G data connections while "Data roaming" configuration is not switched on (and I don't want to always enable this option, since I don't wnat the phone to eventually connect another operator network when abroad, or next to my country boundaries).

Is there any way to solve this from the current firmware version, of course without becoming root on the phone ?

(I have read of any kind of solution by modifying an XML file on the /etc...but doing this will void my warranty, which I don't like either).

I suggest to make an automatic detection of "domestic roaming" by the phone (it is something is already doing my other HTC Desire HD), or allowing this by an enhanced configuration option (like I have read some Cyanogen ROM is already doing).

I would appreciate this to be included in a new firmware update even on current GIngerbread Android version, but for sure this need to be included in the ICS official porting 🙂

Thanks!

Unfortunately it's not possible to change settings or such in the software to get this working differently. The phone reads the SIM card and does what it tells it to, more or less.

Unless your operator can offer you a different SIM card or solution there's not much to do here I think.
