My ICS Experience

Dear all,

A few days ago I had posted a question here about if ICS update is worth all the hoopla. Many people have complained here about the lagging and other aspects like camera etc of the phone not working as expected.

I eventually did an update and I was not very happy with it. The camera problem was certainly there and though I did not experience any major lag as such something was surely amiss. I just thought it would be better to downgrade it back to GB. I did not want to root my phone within the 12 months of purchase and there was no way I could downgrade it. I called up the service desk and they told me that any service center in Bangalore should be able to downgrade it.

I went to the local service center yesterday in Bangalore and I was told that the downgrade is not possible anymore as the default image for Xperia Go is now an ICS one. They procure the image from the server online when they reset any sony phone and they could not help what Android image the st27i would have once they re-image my phone. But, the guy at the service center told that there was a major difference between the ICS update that was provided and the default ICS image. According to him the default ICS image that Xperia Go is coming with now has no issues and the bugs which were experienced by the ICS update are not there. Therefore he said, this would be a better option.

Ultimately I have gone with what he suggested and I have not faced any issues as such. Since I used the phone both after the ICS update and the default ICS Image, one small difference I saw was that in the default ics image I don't see the full screen contact photo. I will report things as and when I find out.

thanks

aditya

Is your GPS working? And you have any wifi issues? :S

Yes, GPS works fine. Though I did not test GPS when briefly I had the image after updating to ICS via pc companion.

Wifi issues were never there.

The only slight niggle I have faced is (and this I forgot to mention in the post above) is the brightness is a little less.. the screen appears a tad darker after I have de-activated the brigthness icon from the tools widget in the home screen.

The ICS on my system is working pretty decently..a little lag here and there but that's tolerable. I have been experiencing issues with typing. Gesture typing doesn't work properly. Initially I thought the issue had something to do with my digits being sticky or the possibility of my fingers being too rough. But I encountered the same problem with the home button as well. When I long press the home button, it  should ideally show me the current tasks but instead it keeps on displaying the home screen again and again and again. I can barely type anything unless I make great efforts to ensure that there is maximum contact with the screen.

Please give us a time frame of the next update. I know the forum's support guys may not have full information, but if they take pains to procure the information through the developers, it will be highly appreciated! We don't really have the time and patience to visit this forum day after day and voice our issues in strongly worded threads but you leave us with no other option. If you do something about it,  all this hulaballoo will cease

P.S : This issue wasn't present in GB. I SERIOUSLY HOPE THE UPDATE COMES SOON

have been using ics for some time now... did have issues on lagging but was compensated by the phone itself after some time.

lagging issues can be fixed using cputuner and similar applications.avoid too much background services running which you do not need all the time.

camera lag as claimed by other users are normal - but only when your free system memory is ver low. i found a 3rd party camera software called "fast burst camera" - very impressive app though.

you display can be adjusted to auto - allowing your device to select brightness level according to lighting conditions. this, will allow you to save more power from your battery and provide you longer standby time.

you can also limit your background services to none, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. using the development settings background processes options.

for android phones - manufacturers should have at least used 1Gb as minimun size rather than the 512Mb. if only you can extend that mem size using your external sd card, in that way i believe lagging should never be an issue.

Since I'd expect there to be a difference between flashing the phone in the store with the current firmware and upgrading the phone from a previous one, it might not even be the ICS image that is different.

Maybe it's just the upgrade process moving over some legacy crap of GB to the upgraded system while the firmware flash does a clean install.

Question is: Will resetting the phone under ICS provide a clean install as well or does it completely reverse it to GB?
