mute or automute for media volume during phonecall

hi all

I've just had an awkward situation where i was playing a game on my phone and then had an incoming call.

I chose to take the call then found I couldn't hear the caller because of the **bleep** media volume level.

The caller hung up on me.

I was under the impression that apps 'pause' or mute during a phonecall?

I know that music players seem to do this but I'm now not clear whether this is a per-app configuration?

I've had a look in call settings and in sound & notification settings but can't seem to see options to permit muting of media volume when taking a call.

Tbh this seems like a useful, practical & basic requirement for taking phonecalls, so can't understand why I'm struggling with this.

Thanks for any help provided.

Regards,

Gary

This looks like a bug, because in-call volume is totally separated from media volume. Each of them has its own volume setting. Does this happen with any game or it only happened with one specific game?

hi Quester

Thanks for the reply.

I may have not clearly described the problem.

There was nothing wrong with the in-call volume - it was simply drowned out by the volume of the game, as I'd been playing it with speakers on i.e. with media volume at about 80%

The game is Clash of Clans.

Regarding whether it happens with other games, I can't say - I don't really play many and CoC is about the only one where there's a lot of 'noise' Slightly_smiling_Face

Anyway, as I said, the game volume should be irrelevant - surely media (or perhaps alarm) volumes should mute... or the game/applcation should pause, so I can take the call without interruption?

I've done a little research and get the impression that the individual application needs to be coded to 'listen' for phonecalls and take approrpriate steps. For example:

ok... interesting development. I did a little more digging:

https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=87252

This link is admittedly for a nexus handset but it implies (to me anyway) that the system should deal with the problem.

Of course on a Nexus it should be AOSP whereas we have a Sony flavour of android...

A comment from Sony or a guru would be cool though Slightly_smiling_Face

So you were hearing game sounds inside the call?

I don't have the game installed so I can't recreate your issue at the moment. But I think it can be the app's fault being not silenced when calls arrive. I have The Croods game installed and it never did this error. But still, I googled this problem and I don't see anyone reporting the same issue.. Can you try Unistalling then reinstalling the game?

Hi Quester

I've tested as you've suggested (with full clean install) under the latest system patch from Sony (android 5.0.2 build  23.1.A.1.28)

The problem still exists.

Haven't been able to verify whether it's just to do with clash of clans or not though.

Would be nice if you try with another game too, this will give us a better idea if it's CoC or a Sony bug.

hi mate

yeah... I did test with another game (called Beat MP3).

The problem didn't occur there but that could be because of specific internal coding in the app OR the use of handset media files e.g. maybe playing media causes a muting or a pause during calls. Media players seem to behave like that.

Also, as per the link I gave in an earlier post, this may be an OS issue (i.e. you shouldn't need in-app coding but you do because there's a bug in AOSP):

https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=87252

It's difficult to say though. Your evidence that there isn't a problem muddies the waters!
