Just upgraded to 5.1.1 using the PC application. I backed up my phone first (even though the PC app confirmed this was not necessary) and the upgrade seemed to go ok. After the update completed, I started the phone and it optimised my 250 apps, which took quote a while. The phone then booted up and seemed to work ok. I then started to notice a few issues such as Google Keep crashing randomly and Google Photos not being able to delete photos from the SD card and then crashing when I tried to launch Gallery. I thought I should reboot the phone and during the start up process it decided it was not happy and rebooted again before it reached the desktop. The phone then decided it needed to go through the application optimisation process again but at least it then booted up ok.
So why does the phone keep entering this optimsation state on a reboot? And how can I stop the phone doing this. I am glad I backed up my phone but am upset that yet another update from Sony / Google and the phone seems to be working alot worse than it did before.
Please tell me that Sony / Google are working on an urgent fix for this and that I won't have to factory reset my phone again !! So glad I took a backup but am disappointed that this is a repeat of the Lollipop release.
On Z3 Compact I had three optimisation stages. First one with around 200 packages, next two with 1 - 2 packages. Now every next boot it optimises 1 app.
On Z2 Tablet I had wierd errors like "Data transmission disabled" on Wifi-only unit so I restarted it. Then after few minutes boot animation it rebooted again and after reboot optimised all packages again.
Then I rebooted it (after few minute breaks on each succesful boot) about 7 - 8 times and on every consecutive reboot it optimised 1 - 2 apps.
Today I spoke with a friend using vanilla Android on Nexus phone and he also experienced single reboot with one package.
UPDATE: Z2 Tablet again started reoptimising all apps after boot loop animation. Tablet reboot takes over 30 minutes to succesfuly start OS.
At least you are only getting the optimisation of just 1 app. My phone is now having to re-optimise all 250 apps every time I try to reboot. When it starts up after a power cycle it gets past the encryption pattern entry and then has a think about booting up with the Sony waves. It then starts freezing and eventually it reboots again and this time it enters optimisation mode. The phone will boot up after this but the total time is around 10mins.
I guess this must be a google issue but surely they must have been aware of this before releasing the update.
Please fix urgently !!!
Both my phone and Sd card are encrypted. I have now moved all apps from Sd to phone and still having this problem on reboot. Phone is sort of stable if I don't reboot. A reinstall of Google keep sort it's crashing issues. Google photos still can't delete from Sd card, which it could before the update. It forces the use of Sony album. Any news on this Sony?
I'm a bit disappointed that I have not had an official Sony post on this thread. The optimising applications issues is happening every time I restart my phone. When the phone is up and running it seems fairly stable and quick now so there must be a problem with the boot up sequence. I have tried starting the phone in safe mode but am getting the same problem. So the issues is as follows:
1) Reboot / Power Off then On the phone.
2) It gets to the device encryption pattern entry ok. I put in a valid entry.
3) Device begins start up process, displaying the wavey purple background. After a good 30-40 seconds the wavey background begins to stutter and eventually freezes completely.
4) Screen then goes blank and the phone restarts again.
5) Again I pass the encryption pattern entry ok.
6) I get the wavey purple background again and after this I see the "Android is starting...." screen and it then optimises 235 applications.
7) After this the phone boots up and seems to work ok.
I have not had any unrequested reboots and all the apps I have tried seem to be working ok. Only application I am not happy with is the latest Google Photos, which can no longer delete photos from the SD card and forces me to use Sony Album to do this.
Please can you comment / fix this issue soon !!
You can try Xperia Care but I suspect you will get standard solution workaround - backup your data and proceed with Repair using PC Companion or Bridge for Mac.

Yep that's exactly the response I got. I can't believe I have to rebuild my phone again. Why can't Sony Google sort out a pain free upgrade
I guess we'll never get the answer but there is something in the roots of Android like lack of proper backup/restore solution and strange update process.
My tablet seems to work quite stable now but I lost some confidence in this device and probably go through firmware wipe route but for now I'll wait for next firmware and then clear it up.
For Z3C I did repair on 5.0.2 like it was supposed to help for Lifelog (it didn't - later Lifelog updates resolved the issue) so I don't want to go through this just yet.
Well at Sony's request I have just finished repairing my phone and the reboot issues seemed to have been resolved. I set up a couple of accounts and updated the phones apps to the latest and a reboot also had not issues. I thought all was working ok so before installing my apps I encrypted both the phone and SD card. This process took a lazy three hours and when it completed the phone rebooted. I entered my pattern and then about 30-40 seconds into the boot up sequence, the wavy screen hung and the phone restarted itself. I was forced to enter the security pattern again and this time the application optimisation process was invoked.
Thanks Sony !!! - I have just wasted 5hrs of my life rebuilding a phone to prove that there is definitely a problem with 5.1.1 when the phone and SD card are both encrypted. Please can you fix this ugently !!!
