mhl connectivity

I bought an mhl adapter on eBay, yes it wasn't the most expensive one around but it worked the first time I used it. Tried it again and it just stayed on a blue screen. Thinking it was the mhl device I bought a new one, this time more expensive. But again my TV stayed on a blue screen on the HDMI channel. Is it the phone? Surely both connectors can't be faulty?

Make sure that you have the latest version of Smart Connect installed on your device.

To update the Smart Connect application

1.Make sure that you have a Google™ account and a working Internet connection.
2.From your phone’s main application screen, find and tap Play Store.
3.Tap the Search icon to open the search field, then type Smart Connect.
4.Tap the Search icon to start the search.
5.In the result list, select Smart Connect , then tap Update.
