My phone constantly shows 4 unread text messages, even after deleting my entire inbox and go back to home screen message icon shows 4 messages.

Settings-apps-all-messages,force stop and clear data. Restart.

Settings > apps > all > messaging > clear data > restart the phone 

Do you have a third party messaging app?

Are you using the preloaded messaging app or a different messaging app?

Welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines

You could try downloading an alternative SMS application, make it the default and then Disable the original app, once done Enable the app again and then make it the default SMS app and then remove the downloaded app, or simply continue using it.
