Marshmallow OTG?

Prior to Marshmallow, when I inserted a usb stick, it was recognised when I used 'detect usb device'. Now with Marshmallow when I detect 'usb device' it says that the usb device must be formatted. There is no option to choose the format type. It will only format it to exFat. I need to use NTFS. Can I do this? Do I have to format it? Am I missing something?

Hi @Ninetothesky,

As far as I know Android does not support NTFS so you will need to format to exFAT.

Also note that after updating your Xperia device to Android 6.0, a third-party file manager app might not find the USB device when connected to the device. The USB device should however be visible in Settings and it's possible to explore it using the native file explorer in Android 6.0.

This is due to the fact that we follow the implementation of Android 6.0 portable storage. Third-party apps must go through the Storage Access Framework to interact with files on the portable storage. Direct access to the portable storage is blocked for privacy and security reasons.

Thanks for your reply. I have formatted a usb stick to exFat to test it, and, yes, I have found that third party file managers can't see it and that the native one can. I have put photos on it and I would like to browse them together in a photo app. I can view them individually, but I can't select them all to browse them in an app which I could do in Lollipop. Is it possible?

In the native file manager it is possible to show miniatures of the files instead of the normal list view by tapping [menu] (the three dots) and choosing grid view, though this might not be exactly what you are after.

When it comes to third party file managers the only app that I am personally aware of has been updated for Android 6.0 is one called Solid Explorer File Manager though you would to pay for it to use it after the initial trial period so bear that in mind if you decide to download it.
