Low storage/insufficient memory

My Xperia Arc S has been having memory issues.  It will constantly give alow storage space warning, which doesn't permit my apps to update.  Then I get several yellow triangles with an exclamation point in them at the top of my phone, telling me the apps cannot update.

I have read several posts on different forums, and several other people have this issue as well.

Yesterday, I updated my phone's android from 2 to 4, and was excited, thinking that this would solve the problem.  It didn't.

From what I have read, the problem seems to lie with the fact, that apps and things are trying to be stored on my phone's internal memory, which is only 400+ MB (i don't know the exact number).  Android 4 allowed me to move a couple apps to my SD card, which has tons more storage than my internal phone memory.  But, it doesn't take care of the problem because my internal phone memory is still clogged, with only about 40MB free to do anything.

I am not a tech guy, but I can read and try to understand various things.  Some posts have suggested that I root the phone or something or partition the SD card.  Why does the phone have to be so complicated for someone like me, who just wants to do a few things on some apps.  I don't want to have warnings flashing everytime.  My wife's phone, which is an LG, never has this problem.  Her and my kids download so much "crap" on her phone, I am amazed, because her phone never gets full or issues warnings.  My arc S is so limited.

What can I do?

Do I just get a new phone?  Or is there something relatively simple that I can do?

Why does technology, that is supposed to be very user friendly for the average person, often involve ridiculously complicated (to the average person) solutions?

I am feeling very anti-Sony right now.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks

You can move the apps to SD card

settings > apps > On Sd card > select them all and move them to the SD card, keep in mind that you can not move all the apps to the sd card.

This doesn't correct the issue. When I go to the apps on the SD card, there are only four apps there. When I go to ALL apps, there are no more that I am allowed to move to SD.
Thanks, but I still need help.

There's nothing you can do, again, there are apps that can NOT be moved to the SD card, not just on Xperia phones but other brands. the only alternative is to root your phone, create a partition and then use an app.

This should give you some insight

Thanks for replying to my posts. The link you included gave me a better idea about memory.

However, I am still struggling to understand why my phone would get to the point where apps won't even update.  On my phone's internal memory, I have not added many apps.  The ony main ones are Facebook and Twitter.  That's pretty much it.  And four other apps that I recently moved to the SD card.

I have barely added any apps, yet my memory is down to 40MB.  I can't delete the apps that came with the phone.

It just seems strange to me that my phone is trying to update apps and I am getting warning memory icons.

It seems like my phone can't do much.  Is that how it is supposed to be?  Maybe I have a bunch of stuff saved somewhere and I don't know it is there, like files, or videos or something.  I moved all my pics and videos to my computer and deleted them from my phone, and it is still giving me grief.

Is my phone a particularly "sucky" phone?

if you have instagram, or any streaming apps clear their cache, this should free up some memory
