Loudspeaker icon doesn't appear until conversation has started

When I call someone and I'm in a private environment, I like to hit the top left loudspeaker icon at once so that I can do other stuff with both my hands until the other end answers. But with the Sony Ericsson Xperia, the loudspeaker icon doesn't appear until the conversation has started. Which means first that I have to hold the phone next to my ear until the other end answers, and second that the screen has gone black, and if I still want to use the loudspeaker I have to tilt it or press a button or something (which always feels like it takes forever) to wake it up so that I can access the loudspeaker icon.

Can you make the loudspeaker icon appear at once the phone number has been called, instead of ...wait for connection....wait while ringing....go black....still wait for some more ringing....ah connection...oh, screen is black, tilt, tilt, furiously click wildly at screen, click top button, or back, back, back, unlock button, ah there, click loudspeaker...hello...hello?....hellooo?...oh 😕

Btw, can you also make the phone wake up faster while during a conversation. I have a small problem with it going black when I am calling centers with automated answering where I need access to the numbers to enter selections in the automated menu.

Well the software in Xperia allows you to set the call on loud speaker only after the call has been attended. I am not sure but there may be some application out there in the market that may help you.

In case of blackening of the screen; it is done by the proximity sensor. If you hold the phone against your face, proximity sensor will work and disables the screen. If this sensor is not present accidental touches can occur which may lead to non intended results. Use headset while calling to Customer Care or special services that require you to dial numbers in between or bear will the proximity sensor action. There is no need of shaking the phone to get back the screen to life. Just place it away from any obstructions and you will have the screen on.

Basically, KannanSuresh said it all: the loudspeaker can only be activated when the call is active (i.e. not while ringing).

It is indeed a bit annoying that the phone takes maybe one second too long to turn on the screen when you remove it from your ear.

However, once you know this and you make yourself getting used to it, you will realize that the proximity sensor works very well and the phone screen does wake up without pressing buttons, shaking the phone or doing funny dances
