Kitkat (4.4.2) makes the tablet with SD card useless

After updating my Xperia Z Wifi tablet to 4.4.2 all my productivity apps stopped working correctly. I could not use Solid Explorer, Dropsync gave warnings all the time, Office Suite Pro could not save correctly and my FTP Server did work anymore.

I had never before had any issues upgrading Android on a tablet or smartphone; and I have been using Android tablets and smartphones since Froyo.

The reason for the problems I experienced on my tablet was a security feature 4.4.2 introduced. Apps, other than stock, can no longer read and write as they please on external storage. What sounds reasonable at first is a total nightmare for my setup; well not only my setup there are a number of people that cannot use their devices the way they used to.

I have a 64GB SD card in my tablet and I sync large chunks of my dropbox onto my tablet. This can be 40 to 50gb. I use dropsync for that and there is no alternative for me because my tablet has only 16GB of interal memory. Sometimes I transfer large video files or parts of my mp3 collection (ripped from vinyl) to my device using FTP Server. That does also not work. Using Solid Explorer or Office Suite to move, delete or modify documents on my SD card is also completely broken.

For me there are only two ways out of this. Buy a laptop and throw the tablet away or root the tablet. If I go for option 2 I will loose warranty for my tablet.

Had I know of this issue I would never have gone for an Android tablet with sd card slot. I would still use a laptop.

I found this read somewhere;  "

" Only first party apps are able to write to the SD card, which is why the File Commander app will still work on Xperia handsets running KitKat. Third-party developers can get round the issue by creating a dedicated private folder on the SD card which the app can write to. A problem with going down this route though is that all data written to these private folders will be deleted as soon as the app is uninstalled."

This means that you have to find an app that creates such a folder (Android) on the sd card.

In that folder you can find appfolders that you can download to, if you force them in the setup.

You can make your own reference to it.

On my sony i had thrown away these files (i have root) , but they came back automatically.

The strangest thing (after root)  is that one app downloads to sd card with no problem, but an other time it doesn't.

If i try an other app it works again, but only in the dedicated Android file on the sd card.

An 64gb sd card was killed, but i can exchange it for a new one.

I had a lot more fun before the Kitkat upgrade with this tablet,.

Sony response on these sort of issues has been poor, to non-existent.

Until I found this post, I thought there was an issue with my Sony 32GB Micro SD card, now I see that the external drive has basically been crippled unless it's a first-party app.

I'm off to have mysels a rootin' tootin' time...and I'm off to CM...

I have the same problem with SD card. For example I cannot delete files on SD card using ES File Explorer.

Also I am not able to write on the card from my computer (which runs Linux and previous did that very well).

I tried this in 2 ways:

1. via USB cable. If I add/delete files to SD card everything seems ok, but as soon as I disconnect the SD cable the card is back as it was at the beginnong.

2. What is more strane (to me) is that exaclty the same happens if I remove the SD card and put it inside the computer (with adapter). Same behaviour.

Does this make sense to you?

Thanks

If you can't format your card anymore,  it is broken.

I had the same with a Sandisk 64gb card,  and i had to send it to Sandisk to get a new one.

I'am not sure the kitkat update did the job,  but there are to many users lately with this problems on the net.

The problem is if you have personal information on the card.

I was allowed to break the card in half to prevent reading the privacy content.

I'am not sure it the shop allows breaking the card. Sandisk does if you ask.

Sorry I read this message after replying to the other one.

So you think the card is broken.

I will try to re-format it then from the computer. If it does not then is probably broken.

Thank you.
