When my Xperia U had an update it was not available through Update Centre (the app on the phone) only from PC Companion. Same thing happened twice with my friend's Arc S. Not that it's that big an issue, but it makes people think their phone's up to date when it's not. Besides, it'd be easier to just update from the phone. Most other phones I know get all their updates OTA.
So, is Update Centre useless?
Yes.
Yes it is.
Sometimes you get a notification that a new software is available, but you can't update via the phone. Then you need to update via PC Companion/Bridge for Mac.
So why you put it in Xperia's phone ?!
You should send a memo to whoever's in charge of the OTA update availability and tell them to fix it. Honestly, the cheapest, often crappy phone have it working flawlessly, I don't see why you shouldn't, too.
Of course this is not as much of a top priority as some other stuff, but yeah, just get it fixed. It's confusing to the consumer and embarrasing for you brand not to have what low-end Huawei or ZTE phone users take for granted.
Anyway, it's up to you. I'm happy enough with regular (timely, if possible) software updates. Just think you should look into it.
Thank you.
