ICS not performing well

Hi all,

I've been going through some of these posts and have noticed that some of the issues that people have raised with the ICS update, I'm also suffering with, some of these issues, and it's left me rather frustrated with the ICS upgrade. Can anyone suggest some pointers to the following problems:

Really bad lag when using phone - so bad that it won't answer phonecalls in time (which defeats the point of having a phone)

App tray/menu reseting to its own way of storing apps and not in user order

Home screen takes ages to appear when leaving application

Keyboard gesture not always working despite being turned on

Terrible battery life

etc. etc.

This list could go on for ages.....

Things I've tried:

I've updated to ICS and repaired using sus this did make a slight improvement but not lasting. I've switched on developer options and limit background processes, this works well, but is not ideal. I've tried killing unused apps from the ram menu.

I've not got any task killers or battery widgets, and McAfee which came installed was deactivated, the phone isn't rooted (nor do I really want to start down that path yet!!).

Any ideas or new suggestions welcome.

Hi Arnab,

I've followed this the other day, and still no joy. I've also tried a repair but that hasn't helped either.

You would have thought that sony would at least test this fully before releasing.....

if you are comfortable with it, you can root the phone and remove any unrequired apps.

Not overly keen on rooting - not when the phone is less than 2months old. I'm going to attempt a factory reset and another repair and see if that helps.

Out of interest, how does unused apps that come preinstalled cause problems? Surely if they are unused they shouldn't be using any CPU or RAM power? or am I missing something?

some of them keep running in background irrespective of your usage frequency.

I had tried updated my Xperia mini to Android 4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.587), and yes it show lag, but the display, internal browser is good. When typing in dial number, it slower than Gingerbread. For performance I still prefer Gingerbread 2.3.4 than ICS. My Xperia mini is unrooted too and n antivirus installed now. I think it is better for the Xperia that has preloaded ICS when they are released on market.

I was about to downgrade to Gingerbread too. Luckely the last attempt proved succesfull and now my Xperia U ICS is as fast as my wife's Xperia U running Gingerbread.

Under settings > developer options

I Enable 2d hardware acceleration u

I Limit the number of backgroud processes to 3 or so. Unfortunatley you need to reapply this setting on rebooting your phone.

I also unlocked my phone grating me admin rights to the stock ICS using this simple method (not involving bootunlocker, loss of data or reinstallations). It allows you to disable some apps or decrease dalvik-cache but that didn't add additional speed (funily enough the dalvik-cache tweak slowed down my phone).

You may also consider disabling apps to run at startup using for instance system tuner, this might help also help keeping your memory usage clean. And don't forget to reboot your phone from time to time.
