Hi dear support team!!
PLEASE REPLY!
Just writing to give you some feedback about the MEDIA SERVER process and battery life on my Xperia ZL.
The feedback is that: I HATE IT!!
It's useless as I believe it manages the media sharing in a local network and updates the media (pics, mp3, etc) that we take or upload to the device. Doesn't it?
Can you please TURN IT OFF? Let us choose when we need it instead of having it running all the time uselessly!!
Please check out the screenshots I provide so you can know better how horrible it looks this issue...
Please use another method for 4.3 and 4.4.
I hope to see this with the ability to be turned off or something better by 4.4 if not, then I'll trade my ZL for a NOKIA or SAMSUNG and won't buy another SONY, ever again!
I think I won't like to do that... but battery life is not good having such a horrible drainer on it.
You're smarter than me, you're the developers, find another way to make it work. It's not good as it is.
Thank you for your help and for passing this on to the developers working on the updates, in advance.

Pd: I'll really appreaciate an answer. I hope I haven't wasted my time elaborating this.

Hi there, I have the same problem with my Xperia Z2 (Android 4.4.4) the Mediaserver drains my battery (30 - 40 %; dead within 8h), but not always. The first time a few weeks ago in Scotland for 3-4 days, after switched off over night the problem was gone. Now, back home in Germany, it started again! I didn't install any app on my phone or add any file to my SD-card. How I can solve this problem? Help is very welcome, ALSO FROM SONY!!
Deactivate the sounds (keyboard, touch sounds etc.). Then media server will consume battery only when music is played. Also in KitKat media server is optimized and eats less battery.
I found out the problem was that :
I couldn't find a way of disabling the media server and the suggestions here to disable sounds or other apps did not change anything. I then unmounted the SD card.
Now my phone as been on for a couple of hours and has only used 6% so it's definitely the media server trying to scan the SD card. This is an interim solution because I need the SD card as it has all my Spotify offline music but at least I can use the phone without charging it up 5 times a day.
Sony, sort it out. How this passed UAT testing I'll never know. Next phone I have will not be a Sony.
I've had a Z1 Compact since March and the battery life has been very good, I can get 2 days between charges and I use it a fair bit.
I charged the phone on Saturday, used it less than normal as I was busy and it needed charging again on Sunday, charged it up and I had to charge it again at lunch time on Monday.
I looked at the battery useage and Media was taking around 50%.
I've tried various fixes for stopping the service running but they stop customized ringtones and alerts. I eventually found a forum post saying that it could be a corrupt media file that is causing the media service to continue scanning it.
I've formatted the SD card and recovered the media from a back up created beofre Saturday and hey presto, problem sorted. Media now runs at startup for a few seconds then closes and battery life is back to normal.
Looks like this problem is indeed caused by corrupt images. Just got to get my mate to sending me hundreds of pictures via whatsapp everyday.
Why on earth it still tries to index the corrupted file?? Can't it just give up indexing ??? Then it is a really disastrous programming, not taking accounts of infinite loops. Just uninstall this application in the next Sony update !!!
@Johan wrote:The media server application indexes all your media on the phone.
Its common that if you transfer media files to your phone that the power consumption of the media server will go up but only for a short period of time. This is necessary, otherwise app's won't be able to find your newly imported media.
But in your case, since you seem to be having troubles with the media server app constantly consuming battery. I think that you may have a/or several corrupt media files in the phone or on your SD card. Causing the media server app to constantly trying to index files.
Just to do a quick test, try to copy all your important media and other files to your computer then delete them from your phone or do a format on your storage memories and check if you still experience this.
If you don't, the problem is as I suspected a broken or corrupt media file. The hard part is to figure out which one.
Thank you. This answer fixed my problem. I had a couple of newly added files that I think were corrupted and when I deleted them the phone worked as usual.
It is funny that your answer helped someone after more than two years.
Thanks again..
