Are you talking about a pre-installed G-mail app. or about a G-mail account you have added to your phone? Do you want to cancel your G-mail account?

The only suggestion I have is to go in to the Manage Applications section in the menu>settings>applications and clear data and cache on all the google type applications.  Mail/Market/Talk etc.

Delete the G-mail application on your phone and cancel your account using your PC.

the only way i could do it was to reset phone to default settings (google account) on my x10mini

Not sure if this answers your question - email confuses me! - but have you tried going to 'Email' button - menu button (bottom left with 4 squares) - Accounts - hold and press 'Gmail Email' until options appear - Remove account...?  That should remove any vestiges of your gmail account from your phone, if you really wish to do that.
