How does mapping apps works without a compass ?

I read in GSMArena that SP doesn´t have a compass.

How does this affects applications for driving, mapping, etc?

I am choosing a new phone and this particular class of apps is very important to me. So will I have good mapping without compass?

I think you can get a good navigation experience on a phone without compass. You still have the GPS signal that can track your position.
